OUR FAQS:

How long does it take to become an electrician?

The journey to becoming a fully certified electrician involves several stages of training. Starting with our 8-week Level 2 electrician course, students are introduced to the basics. To further enhance your expertise, you can then opt for the 18th Edition course, a brief, intensive program lasting only 3 days.

However, to widen your job prospects and gain access to domestic, commercial, and industrial work, we encourage students to undertake the City & Guilds Level 3 course, a 7-week program, followed by the Inspection and Testing course, a 6-day course.

Finally, completing the NVQ Level 3, which includes on-site assessments over a period of 3 to 6 months, leads to full certification as an electrician. This qualification endorses you to work on large JIB (Joint Industries Board) run sites and gives you the gold card certification.

What is the potential income for an electrician?

An electrician’s earning potential can greatly vary depending on factors such as the location of work and the number of hours worked. For instance, working on large building projects in areas like London can yield an annual income of £50K to £100K, albeit with extensive working hours.

Medium-sized Electrical Contractors offer a balance of smaller projects and some smaller sites, along with potential career advancement and more manageable working hours. The income range for this setting can typically fall between £35K to £75K.

Working with smaller Electrical Contractors may entail working for more domestic customers and local authorities, and this may involve “price work”. After gaining some experience you may choose to work for yourself and undertook similar work, before taking on larger projects and then… who knows!

What sets apart an electrician from a domestic installer?

The main distinction between an electrician and a domestic installer lies in the scope of their qualifications and the range of work they can undertake. An electrician, having completed a comprehensive industry-recognised course such as the City & Guilds Level 3, is qualified to work across various domains including domestic, commercial, and industrial electrical installations.

On the other hand, a domestic installer generally completes a shorter course which includes NVQ Level 3 focusing on domestic wiring. This course involves practical training that can be as little as 5 weeks in total, it is not industry recognised and we have never offered such courses as they limit the extent of jobs they can handle. Choosing a full course like the City & Guilds Level 3 opens up more career opportunities without limiting your options.

What's the job availability like for electricians?

The demand for qualified electricians is experiencing a high, with an unprecedented period of sustained work availability. Although the construction industry can be cyclical and potentially affected by economic downturns, holding a comprehensive qualification like the City & Guilds Level 3 provides the flexibility to navigate through these changes.

In fact, medium to large firms often struggle to hire qualified electricians. Additionally, with the rise in popularity of electric vehicles, solar energy installations, and heat pumps, particularly in the Thames corridor, the job market for electricians is expected to grow even further.

Can I transition from an office job to a career as an electrician?

Certainly! The electrical industry provides a rewarding and tangible sense of accomplishment at the end of each job. Electricians often enjoy a good sense of camaraderie, creating a friendly and social work environment. Even without prior experience, we at Essex Electrical Training are committed to teaching you all the required skills and professional etiquette to ensure your successful transition into the electrical trade.

Can I become an electrician without any practical skills?

Absolutely! At Essex Electrical Training, we welcome everyone, regardless of their previous practical experience. Our structured courses are developed to give you a complete understanding of the trade, even if you’re starting from scratch.

Understandably, embarking on a new path can be daunting. At Essex Electrical Training you can “pay as you go” but if you pay for all the courses up front you receive a substantial discount. When you book with us if after two weeks of training you decide to leave the course.

We offer a refund for the balance of your payment.

Our centre boasts excellent road connectivity with ample parking, making it a breeze for those travelling by car. And with most rush hour traffic moving in the opposite direction, your journey should be relatively stress-free.
